Guangzhou, March 9 (Yang Wei Huang Aicheng), Guangzhou Sun Yat-sen University announced on the evening of the 9th that the research group headed by He Xionglei, a professor of life sciences at the school, has made important progress in studying how chromatin structure regulates DNA mutations. The research of tumor mechanism and prevention and treatment provide valuable reference value, and it has an important guiding role in understanding the genome structure and biological evolution of nuclear organisms.
The results of this study were published on the March 9th issue of the international top journal Science.
Mutations are the basis of biological evolution and the main cause of disease. The genetic material of human DNA consists of four bases: A, T, C, and G. Among them, the C base easily mutates into an analog base U, and causes a series of chain reactions that cause changes in human genetic material. According to statistics, 1/4 of human genetic diseases are caused by the above mutations. Therefore, whether or how such mutations are regulated in cells is a very valuable issue.
In the end, Professor He Xionglei's team found that the nucleosome structure in eukaryotic cells can inhibit the hydrolysis and deamination of cytosine C, thereby reducing the mutation from cytosine C to thymine T. This major discovery reveals the mechanism by which chromatin structure regulates genetic core events, DNA mutations.
Professor He Xionglei is a young scholar of the School of Life Sciences at Sun Yat-sen University. After graduating from the University of Michigan in the United States in 2007, he returned to the school through the “Hundred Talents Program†talent introduction project of Sun Yat-sen University and was directly hired as a professor. He was only 30 years old. After returning to school, Prof. He Xionglei devoted himself to the research of chromosomes. In 2010, he published two papers in the top international journal "Nature Genetics" by the first author and correspondence author. Two years later, He Xionglei published the first paper published by the Sun Yat-Sen University in the journal "Science" in the past ten years.
