Hurricane Sandy Robot After Hurricane Sandy Test

Hurricane Sandy Robot After Hurricane Sandy Test

Hurricane Sandy swept the entire eastern United States, destroyed many houses and ships, and caused incalculable damage. But now on the Atlantic Ocean, a robot named "Mercury" has survived the test of hurricanes and is safe and sound.

"Mercury" is the latest model of the "surfer" robot. It is a masterpiece of Liquid Robotics and is well-known in the industry. In this disaster, it successfully resisted the super-high wind of 128 km/h and used its sensors to collect and analyze the wind speed and pressure conditions of the sea surface and sent information to the company headquarters every 10 minutes.

The “surfer” robot is composed of two parts: water and underwater. The water part is a little like a flat boat with 2 solar panels, communicators, and energy sensors. The underwater part is as deep as 7 meters. Two rows of elongated fins collect the wave energy and convert it into electricity. The robots are equipped with a wealth of sensors to collect data on water temperature, salinity, oxygen content, and weather in nearby seas, process them and send them back to the California headquarters using satellite signals.

Edward Lu, chief engineer at Liquid Robotics, said: "This is not the first time that the 'Surfers' robot has been subjected to a hurricane, and other similar robots have previously encountered similar challenges. When we designed this robot, Taking into account the threat of bad weather, the pre-established indicators were able to survive through Category I hurricanes. Now the 'Mercury' and these predecessors have successfully achieved our design goals.” He added: “In this case, The collection of data can still be completed under adverse weather conditions, which proves that our company's technology is advanced and reliable.”

At the end of last year, two “surfers” robots had traveled to Hawaii and eventually arrived in Australia and Japan for more than 300 days, with a range of about 59,000 kilometers. The company stated that the main thrust of this move was "to make further preparations for the study of the ocean." Obviously, the technology can now be used in various situations and the prospects are very broad.
