According to Xinhua News, Apple is entering the Chinese PV industry. The US high-tech company is building a solar project in the southwestern plateau of China, which is the first solar project it has built outside the US. The production of 80 million kWh of clean energy is roughly equivalent to 61,000 Chinese households. Lisa Jackson, Apple's full-time environment vice president, said the project will include two solar arrays, one in Hongyuan County and Zoige County in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture of Sichuan Province. “The electricity generated by the project will be integrated into the local grid in Sichuan, and we will purchase additional energy at the office and retail location.â€
Both projects are expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2015.
The partners who jointly developed the project with Apple include SunPower Corporation of the United States and Tianjin Zhonghuan Semiconductor Co., Ltd., Sichuan Development (Holdings) Co., Ltd., Leshan Power Co., Ltd., and Tianjin Jinlian Investment Holdings Co., Ltd.
Among them, Tianjin Zhonghuan Semiconductor Co., Ltd. and Leshan Electric Power Co., Ltd. are listed companies; SunPower is the largest solar cell module manufacturer in the United States and the second largest solar power generation company in the world.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Jackson said that the company's cooperation with SunPower in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture is only part of Apple's larger environmental protection plan. She said: "For us, dealing with climate change is very important. China is our manufacturing partner and we look forward to bringing the same innovation to China. This is just the beginning."
Apple and SunPower have also worked together before, and the two companies built six solar power plants in California, Nevada, and North Carolina.
