Netflix CEO Redd Hastings said in a recent speech in Mexico City that traditional radio and television services will die in 2030.
In his speech, Hastings talked about Netflix's rise in Latin America, saying that television will become another victim of the popularity of streaming video services. He said: "Broadcast TV can only last until 2030."
Hastings also compared radio and television services to horses. He said: "The radio and television service is like a horse. It is quite good before the car appeared."
Prior to this, Hastings also published "the theory of television extinction." For example, in April 2013 he published an 11-page article on the Netflix website saying that IPTV will completely replace broadcast TV in the next few decades.
A year and a half later, broadcast TV service providers such as HBO, Showtime and CBS all launched their own mobile applications. In addition, the US satellite TV provider Network is also preparing for the network set-top box pay TV service, plans to bundle Disney's ESPN channel and the US cable channel A&E.
The advertising revenue of radio and television services has been in a dilemma. In the past 10 years, only the advertising revenues in 2011 and 2012 have continued to grow. The industry generally believes that in the next two years, advertisers will put more budget into the digital platform than TV.
Although Hastings did not say what data made him think that radio and television would die in 2030, it is not him who holds this view. Cisco has surveyed 50 TV experts in 2011 and believes that traditional TV viewing methods will die in 2030.
