Silkworms eating carbon nanotubes and graphene spit out stronger filaments

Researchers at Tsinghua University published a report in the journal "Nano Letters" that silkworms that consume carbon nanotubes and graphene spew even stronger filaments. The researchers said that the reinforced wire can be used for durable protective fabrics, biodegradable medical implants, and environmentally friendly wearable electronic devices.

In the experiment, the researchers sprayed aqueous solutions containing carbon nanotubes or graphene onto mulberry leaves eaten by silkworms, and then collected the silk produced by silkworm cocoons. After testing them, they found that the strength of the reinforced wire is twice that of the normal wire, and the pressure that can withstand before breaking is at least 50% higher than that of the normal wire. The wire after high-temperature heating and carbonization is also conductive.
