What is a foil bearing?

A sliding bearing that uses an elastic foil to suspend the shaft by fluid dynamic pressure or static pressure.
Foil bearings are new bearings developed in the 1950s.
The belt is used as an elastic foil, and the hydrostatic pressure suspension shaft is called a foil with a hydrostatic bearing, and the fluid dynamic pressure suspension shaft is called a foil spring dynamic bearing.
After the foil strip is tensioned, it is fixed by the pressing plate and the determining device; the three segments are wrapped around the journal; equivalent to 3 bearing pads.
When the shaft rotates; the smoothing agent enters the three segments with the viscous effect; the dynamic pressure smoothing film is formed, and then the foil strip is deformed and the shaft is disengaged from the touch.
This principle can also be used to establish a smooth film between the moving foil strip and the rigid appearance (cylindrical surface, arc surface, plane) of the guiding effect; prevent the foil strip from directly touching the guiding surface; then reduce the conflict.
Foil bearings are not worn; no mechanical vibration and noise; long service life; gas, steam or liquid can be used as a smoothing agent.
The foil has a large elasticity; therefore, the flange deformation can be properly manipulated by pulling or twisting to control the bearing capacity, rigidity and high-speed stability of the bearing.
In the calculation of the time of such bearings; it is necessary to consider the elastic deformation of the foil according to the elastic fluid dynamic pressure smooth theory.
