New high quality topological superconducting materials come out

The reporter learned from the Hefei Institute of Physical Science of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the 25th that researchers from the strong magnetic field science center of this institute recently developed a new type of high quality single crystal. The superconducting performance of this material is as high as 91.5%, and it is very stable in the air. Periodic quantum oscillation signals appear in the magnetic field range of 10 Tesla to 35 Tesla, demonstrating that it has a topologically protected surface state.

The topological superconducting state is a new state of matter. The surface of the topological superconductor has a topologically protected, gapless metal state with a thickness of about 1 nanometer, and the interior is a superconductor. If a topological superconductor is divided into two, a new metal surface with a topological protection of about 1 nm will naturally appear on the new surface. This peculiar topology makes the topological superconductor an ideal material for quantum computers that can never go wrong.

The research team of the Strong Magnetic Field Science Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences used the high-temperature melting method to successfully insert the alkaline-earth element strontium (Sr) into the typical topological insulator material Bi2Se3 to obtain a high-quality topological superconducting single crystal. The superconductivity of this material is as high as 91.5%. The researchers placed the material in the air for up to four months and found that the superconducting properties of the material did not change, indicating that it was very stable in the air.

The researchers used a steady-state strong magnetic field experiment device No. 5 water-cooled magnet to detect the topological nature of this single crystal and found that the material showed periodic quantum oscillation signals in the magnetic field range of 10 Tesla to 35 Tesla. Analyzing the oscillating signal, the researchers gave evidence of a topologically protected surface state for this system. These results indicate that this single crystal is an ideal material for studying topological superconductivity.
