Photocatalyst can split water with visible light

Japan ’s New Energy Industry Technology Comprehensive Development Agency (NEDO) has collaborated with the University of Tokyo and Shinshu University to develop an acid sulfide photocatalyst that uses visible light to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This photocatalyst consists of an acidic sulfide semiconductor called Y2Ti2O5S2, which can absorb sunlight with a wavelength of less than 640nm to decompose water.

In addition to Y2Ti2O5S2, there are many other materials in acid sulfide semiconductors, which have great potential in absorbing visible light to decompose water. The catalyst developed this time is in the form of fine particles. In the future, when making large-area photocatalyst sheets, it is convenient to apply simple processes such as spraying. If the acid sulfide semiconductor material can be used as a photocatalyst for the water decomposition reaction, it is expected to realize a low-cost hydrogen production process.
