Recently, the Shenhua Ningmei Group's annual output of 500,000 tons of coal-based olefins projects successfully produced end-qualified polypropylene products, marking that the world's largest coal-to-propylene project has fully entered the trial production stage from the commissioning stage.
It is understood that from 2003, China surpassed the United States to become the world's largest polypropylene market. In recent years, the scale of domestic polypropylene production has been expanding year by year, and the market capacity has been increasing year by year, and the demand has been growing rapidly.
According to statistics, in 2010, the country’s olefin demand was 10 million tons, domestic production was about 7 million tons, and other imports depended on imports. However, prior to this, almost all of the domestic polypropylene projects used crude oil to make olefins, which did not comply with China's “rich coal, lean oil, and low gas†resource endowment.
In order to increase the use value of China’s coal resources and ease the excessive dependence of the petrochemical industry on petroleum resources, in May 2007, a total investment of 17.8 billion yuan was spent on China’s “Eleventh Five-Year†key construction project—an annual coal production capacity of 500,000 tons. The olefin project was officially started in the Shenhua Ningxia Coal Group.
The project uses coal as raw material, and ultimately produces 500,000 tons of polypropylene, 188,800 tons of mixed aromatics, 41,200 tons of liquid fuel, and 13,800 tons of cesium per year. The annual output value is nearly 8 billion yuan.
Chen Zhiqing, head of the Shenhua Ningmei Coal Chemical Company, said that because the project included the first industrialized GSP coal gasification plant and MTP methanol-to-propylene plant in the world, the main process of the project was completed at the end of 2010. A large-scale technological transformation has been carried out, and the technical process has been optimized to solve the bottleneck problem of restricting stable operation.
