Russian scientists discover new features of meteorite impact drill

The Popigai crater in central and eastern Siberia, Russia, has more than ten times more diamond reserves than the rest of the world. These natural diamonds were named "impact drills" due to the fall and impact of meteorites. Impact drills have unique polishing properties for ideal smooth surfaces, and even scratch-resistant nano-single-crystal diamond surfaces can be polished with these impact drills. Because the impact drill has a very good grinding and polishing effect, even under the electron microscope, the staff found no scratches. Known as "impact drill", these unique properties are favored by scientists and can be used in high-precision optical systems such as satellites and jewelry; and in other industrial fields such as new composite materials, boring machines and cutting tools. Nikolai added that for the study of “impact drills”, Russia will work with the Kiev Institute of Ultra Solid Materials, Almazy Anabara Diamonds and Element Six.

The project will also conduct exploration of the “Popigai” crater in 2014. "At that time, we will collect impact drill samples near the pit," Pokhilenko said. "This new type of natural diamond reserves is estimated to be around 3 billion carats."

Compared with rare earth resources, the use of industrial diamonds has expanded rapidly in recent years, and diamond consumption has increased at a rate of 10% to 15% per year. At present, the world's synthetic diamond production has reached 14 billion carats; in contrast, "impact drill" natural diamonds, due to their unique attributes, will be the perfect winner of synthetic diamonds in the future market.
